VHB joined the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) on October 18 at a ribbon cutting event to officially open the new $310M Consolidated Rental Car Center located at Boston Logan Airport. VHB provided planning, permitting, ITS, and design services to Massport. The firm has been involved from the start of planning and permitting through a multitude of design efforts including traffic signal and traffic maintenance design, bus system planning and design, wayfinding sign design and redesign of the terminal area curbside allocations.
The new facility includes a 120,000 square foot customer service center, secure cleaning, fueling and maintenance areas, and a four level garage that provides over 3,100 parking spaces for all nine rental car companies that service the airport. The primary environmental focus was to reduce the number of shuttle buses on airport roadways, ultimately reducing the environmental impact. The Rental Car Center is a LEED certified garage with approximately 1.3 million square feet of parking, office and check in space.
“We’ve helped bring Massport to the forefront of airport ITS implementation with the design and installation of a Ground Transportation Operations Center, bus fleet CAD/AVL system and real-time DMS displays throughout the airport,” said Project Manager Mike Regan. “The project is a great example of bringing the breadth of VHB’s skill and expertise to a valued client.”
