Long Island Sound Blue Plan is Available for Public Review

Posted May 21, 2019 by

The draft Long Island Sound Blue Plan is available for public review and comment until June 21, 2019. Below is more information on the Plan as well as dates for an upcoming webinar and meetings.

The Long Island Sound (LIS) Blue Plan is a marine spatial plan for the waters of Long Island Sound.  Together with an LIS Resource and Use Inventory, the Blue Plan will present an informational and policy tool that is intended to facilitate better siting of new projects in the Sound’s offshore waters. Its goals include protecting the Sound’s existing human uses and natural resources along with reducing potential conflicts.  It will make it easier for new projects to be compatible with the Sound’s  economic, cultural and ecological attributes and will better serve all interests potentially affected by the State of Connecticut’s decision-making processes.  The Blue Plan is not a new regulatory program and creates no new permits, rather it will provide information, guidance and direction in how the State’s existing regulatory programs that pertain to the Sound’s offshore waters will be carried out for new, proposed uses.  Mandated by the Connecticut Legislature in 2015 (§25-157(t)), the Blue Plan and has been developed by the CT Department of Environmental Protection with guidance and support from an appointed 16-member Advisory Committee.  The Blue Plan will be incorporated into Connecticut’s Coastal Management program and provide a wealth of new information about existing human uses and natural resources for all parties to utilize.

The Blue Plan public comment period is open until June 21st, and more information is available on the Blue Plan website: www.ct.gov/deep/lisblueplan.

The Blue Plan Development Team is hosting a webinar on May 30th, and a series of public meetings to facilitate greater understanding of the process.  These are being offered as opportunities to present the basics of the Blue Plan and to answer any questions people have.
