We are happy to announce that Nigel Pickering joined Horsley Witten as a Senior Engineer/ Senior Scientist on December 1st.
Nigel has more than 20 years for experience in watershed modeling and nutrient management for a broad range of land uses, including agriculture, urban, suburban, and rural. He has been a major contributor to watershed modeling and integrated water resources management projects throughout Massachusetts during his eleven-year tenure with the Charles River Watershed Association. He was the primary author of the Upper/Middle Charles River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study. Nigel has developed specific methods to assess nutrient loading and hydrologic impacts of agricultural lands. He is a Professional Engineer, registered in Florida, and has a MS and PhD in Agricultural Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Bedford, New Hampshire – Normandeau Associates is pleased to announce the promotion of Robert Varney to the position of Executive Vice President. “Bob’s promotion assures continuity in Normandeau’s management during a period of substantial growth and expansion,” said President and CEO Pam Hall. “Bob’s senior management experience as New England’s longest-serving EPA Regional Administrator as well as his previous experience as NH DES Commissioner, combined with his knowledge of the environmental consulting industry makes him the ideal candidate to manage our expanding national and international operations.”
Mr. Varney has been a Senior Vice President for the past three years, helping expand and strengthen Normandeau’s services while adding several highly qualified and experienced staff. “It is an honor to work with so many dedicated, experienced and talented professionals who provide high-quality services to our clients,” said Varney.
While at EPA New England, Mr. Varney was responsible for taking on high profile initiatives associated with energy, climate change, homeland security, clean air and safe drinking water, superfund and brownfields cleanup and redevelopment, environmental justice, healthy communities, and the restoration of rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. Bob is nationally recognized for instituting many innovative approaches and initiatives that have served as national models. He managed over 700 employees with a budget in excess of $530 million.
Prior to EPA, Mr. Varney was one of the nation’s longest-serving state environmental commissioners. As Commissioner of the NHDES, he was appointed by three governors of both political parties. Mr. Varney has chaired numerous organizations such as the Environmental Council of the States, NH Energy Facility Site Evaluation Committee, NH Water Resources Council, federal Ozone Transport Commission, NAFTA Governmental Advisory Committee, and the State/EPA Superfund Policy Forum. He has received many awards, including EPA’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Environmental Merit Award, the ECOS Founders Award and the John H. Chafee Award for Leadership.
