Climate change changes everything. Environmental, economic, and social systems are both driving and responding to climate change. The third annual EBC New England Regional Climate Change and Resiliency Summit will provide cutting-edge and actionable insights into ways in which climate change is driving climate resilience work across New England, including the prospects for federal funding to support adaptation and mitigation projects, the key social and economic forces that can be expected to drive accelerated resiliency efforts, and some examples of regional and business-scale initiatives that exemplify response to climate change through adaptation and mitigation.

In the morning session, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) will provide an up-to-the-minute report on efforts in the US Senate to secure funding to address climate resiliency, with a focus on topics of particular interest to New England. Next, U.S. Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH-1), a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, has been invited to give an update on the House’s efforts to move a major infrastructure bill into law.
The next presenters will describe the latest in climate modeling tools, projected climate conditions and climate hazards, and how these “reasonably foreseeable” future conditions are changing the legal standards for the design and construction of new buildings and infrastructure as well as the renovation or replacement of existing structures.
Other experts will discuss how the insurance and finance industries are responding to the ever-improving modeling and science in terms of understanding and planning for climate risk, and how droughts and other climate impacts in other parts of the country and the world are starting to drive migration patterns that are already bringing new residents to New England.

The afternoon session will include two panels of experts on climate resilience efforts in New England. Speakers on the first panel are from nonprofit organizations that operate at a regional or watershed scale in both coastal and inland areas. They will share frontline observations on challenges and opportunities for projects that provide protections and benefits across multiple communities.
The second panel will focus on how businesses are addressing the imperatives for proactively adapting to climate change profitably, including in coordination with the communities in which they operate. The end of the day panel will bring together many of the presenters from the morning and afternoon sessions to reflect on what the future may hold for climate resilience efforts across the New England states.
