EBC Sustainability Program Series, Part One: The Environment and Beyond – Corporate Sustainability
July 12, 2013 @ 7:30 am - 12:00 pm
From a business point of view, the terms "sustainability", "corporate social responsibility (CSR)", and "corporate responsibility" are used interchangeably. They all describe an approach to corporate strategy, management, and reporting that integrates environmental management, customer relations, and employee and community dialogue. Regardless of what it is called, this integrated approach is here to stay and has major implications for environmental professionals. They are increasingly asked to lead or contribute to initiatives with strong links between environmental and economic, labor, and community topics. This trend presents challenges to environmental practitioners, but also provides enhanced career opportunities as they engage deeper with other areas at their own corporation or at client companies that they serve.
These challenges and opportunities are explored in a series of three EBC programs, of which this first part presents a "lay of the land" of the major topics included in leading corporate sustainability initiatives and how these fit into corporate strategy. The two subsequent EBC sustainability programs in this series are scheduled for September 20 and November 15 and will build on this sustainability program and focus on sustainability data management and reporting.
