CZM and MassDEP recently released new guidance – Applying the Massachusetts Coastal Wetlands Regulations: A Practical Manual for Conservation Commissions to Protect the Storm Damage Prevention and Flood Control Functions of Coastal Resource Areas (or the “Coastal Manual”) – to advance protection of storm damage prevention and flood control functions of coastal resource areas. The Coastal Manual provides guidance on interpreting the applicable WPA Regulations, clarifies the delineation of the resource areas, expands on the description of their beneficial functions, and provides practical information to applicants and Conservation Commissions on how to apply and meet performance standards to protect the existing functions. In addition, the manual describes the best available tools, data, and information for a complete and accurate project review. Speakers will address “hot topics”, including issues surrounding beaches, dunes, banks, and floodplains, as well as typical projects and coastal erosion. Initial workshops have been geared to local Conservation Commissions; join us for this first workshop for consultants and others in the private sector to learn about this new best management practice guidance for coastal projects.
