EBC Site Remediation and Redevelopment Committee – Green Remediation
October 21, 2008 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am
We typically select the best remedial alternative at a site based on the likelihood of success, the cost of the endeavor, and the time frame for achieving the remedial goals. These remain critical factors. EPA has suggested that we consider another factor: sustainability. Sustainability suggests that we take a hard look at the impacts of our remedial systems, focusing on the following core elements:
~ increasing energy efficiency and/or using alternative sources of energy;
~ conserving water;
~ improving water quality;
~ managing and minimizing toxics;
~ managing and minimizing wastes;
~ reducing air emissions.
We will explore EPA’s focus on green remediation both conceptually and by looking at specific projects where “green” techniques have been evaluated or implemented. Our starting point is EPA’s Green Remediation Primer, which is called “Green Remediation: Incorporating Sustainable Practices into Remediation of Contaminated Sites” (available at http://cluin.org/greenremediation/).
