Rhode Island of Environmental Professionals
In passing the Resilient Rhode Island Act and creating the Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council (EC4), Rhode Island has undertaken an impressive initiative to proactively address the impacts of climate change on the physical and socio-economic well-being of the State. One key duty of the Council is to ensure that climate change efforts throughout the state are coordinated. By aligning research priorities and minimizing duplication of effort, the Council will help to promote efficiency in the state’s approach to climate change and ensure that the benefits of such efforts are maximized. There are currently several multi-community and statewide efforts.
This program will provide a summary of several multi-community and statewide efforts that further the goals of the EC4 including Statewide Planning’s recently completed study on the Vulnerability of Transportation Assets to Sea Level Rise, the RI Coastal Resources Management Council’s Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan (known as the BeachSAMP), and StormTools, a statewide effort to make coastal and riverine flooding data available for climate change studies. The morning will commence with a brief overview of the EC4’s efforts to date, presented by Janet Coit, Director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. Grover Fugate, Executive Director of CRMC will then provide an overview of recent BeachSAMP progress. Dr. Malcolm Spaulding will discuss completed StormTools initiatives and provide an overview of next steps. Finally, Chris Witt from Statewide Planning will present results from the recent study of the impacts of climate change on the State’s transportation infrastructure. The morning’s speakers will be joined by Jessica Stimson, State Hazard Mitigation Officer at RIEMA in a panel discussion of recent and upcoming climate change initiatives in the State.
