The issue of PCB-impacted building materials in the northeast is well known throughout the environmental engineering industry. EBC has discussed this issue for nearly the decade including assessment plans for PCBs in building materials, industry standard of care, development of appropriate remedial strategies, implementation of remediation alternatives, and evaluation of post-remedial sampling/risks. The institutional knowledge of this topic has grown significantly in this time frame and there have been many lessons learned on numerous remediation projects.

This seminar will focus on the state of the industry and discuss advanced issues in the assessment / cleanup of PCB-impacted building projects. Our speakers will include experts on the laboratory analysis of PCBs in building materials, air and environmental media, the development of successful assessment plans (or presumptive non-sampling approaches), the design of PCB-remediation alternatives, the assessment of potential human health risks, the implementation of PCB remediation projects and the use of deed restrictions/operation and maintenance plans for continued building use.

Specific topics to be discussed include:

  • Current industry Standard of Care for PCB building material projects;
  • Demolition and renovation scenarios;
  • Types of source materials present in buildings;
  • Sampling approach and analytical techniques;
  • Risk characterization;
  • Remediation/abatement methods;
  • Disposal options and considerations;
  • Deed restrictions and monitoring of remaining impacts.

The program will conclude with a panel discussion including the EPA Region 1 PCB Coordinator, Ms. Kim Tisa.
