There are unique challenges related to planning and implementing a coastal dredge project when the sediment to be dredged is found to be contaminated under state or federal regulations. The challenges often start with the logistics and requirements of the sample collection and analytical testing phase and include identifying and obtaining the necessary permits to authorize the removal and disposal of the contaminated dredged material. Often, one of the biggest challenge is identifying an economically viable and environmentally feasible disposal option for the contaminated material.

This EBC Ocean and Coastal Resources program will provide an overview of the various challenges associated with addressing contaminated coastal and marine dredged material, including general permitting requirements, case studies and, creative solutions for managing and disposing of the contaminated sediment.

The program will bring together experts including regulatory agency representatives, consultants and contractors to provide lessons learned and case studies of recent coastal dredging projects. The regulatory representatives will provide an agency perspective regarding considerations during project reviews. The consultant presentations will provide perspectives on how project development and permitting professionals account for the unique challenges associated with implementing a contaminated sediment dredging project. The contractor presentation will discuss innovative aquatic placement alternatives with beneficial use, such as Pneumatic Flow Tube Mixing, that are currently garnering attention of the industry and regulators alike.

A panel discussion will follow the formal presentations.
