Shoreline stabilization has historically and continues to be crucial to the protection of existing developed coastal areas. Historic approaches tended toward “hard” structures, which paradoxically often amplify shoreline erosion by preventing natural processes. “Soft” solutions, including living shorelines, have become increasingly popular, but can be difficult to design and permit. This EBC Ocean and Coastal Resources program will address the current status and knowledge of living shoreline applications in Massachusetts.
For this EBC Ocean and Coastal Resources program a group of industry and regulatory experts as well as practitioners will present their practical experiences and perspectives to explore living shorelines: when, where and how should they be implemented, including hybrid hard/soft approaches; regulatory and permitting considerations; and lessons learned.
