This program will highlight recent progress made in developing effective management practices for addressing limited reuse soils (LRS) in development and construction activities in New Hampshire. The program will also explore whether other states’ approaches to managing LRS could offer promising potential future regulatory strategies for the handling and disposition of these soils in the Granite State. Presenters will include representatives from NHDES and NHDOT, as well as environmental consulting/ contracting practitioners and environmental attorneys.

LRS – sometimes referred to as “mildly contaminated soils” — are generated in large volumes from public infrastructure projects and private development/construction projects. Costs for disposal or treatment of these soils as waste or “contaminated soils” (e.g., in landfills, or with thermal treatment) can be high, and may be “overkill”; but unrestricted reuse can also be problematic, and may lead to inappropriate use of these soils in sensitive settings (e.g., at residential properties or near water supplies) that could cause or contribute to widespread low-level contamination. After highlighting current practices, this program will engage panelists and audience members in an exploration of some ideas for finding more “middle ground” for the management of these soils in New Hampshire.

Continuing Education Certificates are awarded by the EBC for this program (3.0 training contact hours). Please select this option during registration if you wish to receive a certificate.
