EBC & NECA Young Professionals Networking Event: Discussion on Environmental Impacts of Everett Casino Project
February 5, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - October 24, 2021 @ 2:19 am
The Everett Casino is the topic of many conversations in the environmental community. The cleanup includes the remediation of former Monsanto Chemical Company, located on the Mystic River in Everett, MA. Out of the $1.75 Billion dollar casino project, a large chunk will be dedicated for the remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater, caused by years of out of date compliance/permits and leakage of chemicals from the plant. This project is scheduled to take three to four months to complete and has a rough contract value of $30 million dollars. Project managers for Wynn casinos mentioned that they plan on mitigating the contamination to a higher standard. There are many opinions regarding the Everett Casino. This project will not only impact the environmental industry, but raises significant questions for the energy industry as well. Natural gas prices have declined nationwide, but are now increasing in New England due to inadequate supply, which is simultaneously causing electricity prices to rise. Meanwhile, the price of oil has dropped dramatically this year, creating an incentive for both homes and generators that switched to natural gas to switch back to oil. Wynn has proposed using some “renewable sources” and has enumerated several energy efficiency measures the casino will use in his Draft EIR. At this YEP/NECA networking event, we plan on discussing four core questions pertaining to the environmental and energy impacts of the project:
- What will be the environmental impacts to local residents caused from this project?
- How would you advise Mr. Wynn to heat and power his casino?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages to adding a supplemental renewable source on the casino site?
- What will be some of the transportation, social, environmental, civil engineering, acoustical and financial impacts?
