EBC Energy Summit: New England Smart Grid Pilot Programs

January 20, 2010 @ 8:30 am - 1:00 pm

There is a convergence occurring between the energy demands of modern society, the sustainability requirements of the environment in which we live, the intermittent renewable energy resources and the need to maintain a reliable electricity system, and the business realities of the utility industry. The combination of these factors is driving the development and implementation of a new power delivery system. This “smarter” network will utilize much of the same basic infrastructure we know today, but will also draw on advanced monitoring, control and communications technology that will be presented in this smart new conference.
This EBC Energy Committee Program will provide an update on the emerging developments with regional Smart Grid Pilot Programs by the leaders of the National Grid, NSTAR and Western Mass. Electric Company Smart Grid Programs. Companies that provide the smart grid technologies for these programs also will describe their equipment and systems.
The Green Communities Act of 2008 (Section 85) requires each electric distribution company in Massachusetts to establish a smart grid pilot program.  Each pilot program shall utilize advanced technology to operate an integrated grid network communication system in a limited geographic area.  Each pilot program will include

  • Advanced (?smart?) meters that provide real time measurement and communication of energy consumption
  • Automated load management systems embedded within current demand-side management programs and
  • Remote status detection and operation of distribution system equipment.

A specific objective of each pilot shall be to reduce, for those customers who actively participate in the pilot, peak and average loads by a minimum of 5 per cent.
Presenters include:

  • Shiv Mani, FERC’s Office of Energy Policy and Innovation on FERC Smart Grid Policy
  • Keith Gossage, Director of National Grid’s Massachusetts Smart Grid Program
  • Larry Gelbien, Director of NSTAR’s Smart Grid Program
  • Camilo Serna, Director of Northeast Utilities Smart Grid Programs – MA and CT
    Plus
  • Representatives from General Electric, ABB, Siemens and other companies describing their Smart Grid Technologies
