EBC Dam Management Program Series: Dam Safety in New England
May 27, 2009 @ 7:30 am - 12:00 pm
Thank you to our Member Company, Foley Hoag LLP, for hosting this program at their facility.
Early New England?s history is shaped by water, first for transportation (both seafaring and inland) and later to harness the region?s water power, which made New England an early leader during the Industrial Revolution. This legacy has left the region with a wide variety of dams in various states of repair or disrepair.
The USACE National Inventory of Dams maintains records for 3851 dams within the New England Region. The dams vary in age from 30 to over 360 years old (the Old Oaken Bucket Pond Dam in Scituate MA was built in 1640). Construction techniques include earthen, stone, masonry, and concrete. Uses include water supply, power production, flood control and recreation and ownership is just as varied including private owners, Communities, States and the Federal Government. Navigating the web of statutory responsibilities is an imposing task for both owners and regulatory agencies alike.
This program, the first in a series of three EBC programs on dam management, will address dam safety and risks, enforcements actions, and lessons learned and will include speakers from federal agencies and an interactive panel of New England State Dam Safety Officials discussing the state of their State Dam Safety Programs.
