EBC Climate Change Seminar Update – Climate Change Science and Consequences

June 8, 2012 @ 7:30 am - 12:00 pm

Climate change in the northeast US is the new reality, and extreme weather the new normal.  As average global temperatures continue to warm, records show that extreme weather events are on the increase, as are the damages associated with those events.  The dramatic and continuing sea ice decline in the Arctic and the increased rate of melting of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets are prominent features of the changing state of the climate during the decade.

At this EBC Climate Change program, following Representative Smizik’s discussion of climate change activities in Massachusetts Dr. Cameron Wake will speak on current climate change research with a focus on the climate change over the post century and potential future change over the next century. Then Dr. Henry D. Jacoby will review progress to date in efforts to construct an adequate response to the growing climate risk and discuss the outlook for the next few years. Following Cynthia McHale’s discussion of the role of the insurance industry, Sonia Hamel will lead a panel discussion.
