About Eastie Farm

Mission: Food security and climate justice in the Environmental Justice community of East Boston

Vision: A world where people are engaged with all aspects of their food systems in a way that benefits individual-, community-, and planetary health.

Programs:

    1. Urban Farming: giving people access to land so they can dabble with growing their food together with their neighbors, for the community. It gives urban folks an opportunity to connect with each other and with nature. We offer various workshops from composting to rainwater harvesting to cooking healthy meals. We are building Boston’s first zero carbon greenhouse – heated and cooled by geothermal energy, and powered by 100% green community choice electicity. While the greenhouse will grow more food, serve as a space for food distribution and community events and education, it also stands as a model of how 21st century development should be – community-sensitive and climate-consious. In our spaces we do several community events including regular standup comedy.
    2. Food Access: We connect with farms in the state that treat the land and their employees well, buy from them, and sell locally at market price. While merging those with means and those without, removing any stigma in accepting food aid, this method allows us to generate revenue to support those who are unable to afford market price. It also routes local money to local farmers thus improving local economy. You can also subscribe to Eastie Farm’s CSA. eastiefarm.com/csa
    3. Education: kids can get their hands dirty, learn where food comes from, where waste goes, put a seed in the ground, harvest, sample, wonder, and try experiments. We also take the opportunity to talk about our larger natural ecosystem. Our goal is to foster the creation of more environmental stewards. Check out climatenature.org – it has some of our work.
