Casella’s Landfill expansion in Southbridge is no longer viable and the 405,600 TPY landfill is scheduled to close in 2018. Charleton’s private well contamination is being addressed by the installation of a $10M new waterline from Southbridge into Charleton. Waste Management’s Chicopee 365,000 TPY landfill will be closed in 2018. Waste Management’s Taunton 120,120 TPY landfill will be closed in 2020. Covanta’s 101,125 TPY CMW landfill will be closed in 2020. Over 900,000 TPY of disposal capacity in the State will be gone in two years. That’s almost 3,000 tons per day of disposal capacity GONE! At the same time, we continue to generate millions of tons of contaminated soils and there is less than 1,000,000 tons of capacity remaining for Comm 97-01 soils. Long haul rail transfer continues to dominate and drive Massachusetts State Master Planning. Our MSW is pouring across the northern border to New Hampshire and westerly to New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, yet the Rhode Island and Maine borders remain closed to our MSW export. Vermont is down to one landfill way up on the Canadian border and most of our processed wood from Massachusetts is hauled past the Canadian border into Quebec.

Attendees at the annual “Talking Trash” conference will hear from key business stakeholders, and from MassDEP, who will discuss the impending shortfall of disposal capacity anticipated in Massachusetts (and New England) in the next five years as well as planning efforts to address our long term disposal. Learn about these impending closures, about the planned rail haul facilities, and how the shifting of tons will cause major changes in New England’s solid waste industry. Join us to gain an understanding of the pros and cons of the alternatives and the decision making needed so as to allow Massachusetts to better control its future.
