Beach nourishment is the import of (typically) sandy fill to enhance coastal beaches, combat erosion, and buffer inland resources/infrastructure from the effects of storms and sea level rise. Though employed nationally, New Jersey has created a standout example for systematically approaching the need for nourishment and ensuring it is implemented wisely. The state’s 40-year Beach Nourishment Program has helped preserve the natural, social, and economic functions of a vital coastal community.

The Northeast Shore and Beach Preservation Association (NSBPA) is a professional organization representing coastal states from Maine to New Jersey. The NSBPA strives to recognize regional differences and works to provide a technical basis from which solutions to erosion can be found.

This webinar is a joint effort between NSBPA and the EBC Ocean & Coastal Resources Committee, with members of the NSBPA discussing the implementation of large-scale nourishment from soup to nuts and digging into 40 years of bi-annual monitoring data to assess impacts and outcomes. Attendees will gain insight into the how and why of pursuing beach nourishment in their communities, as well as regional environmental and regulatory differences constraining projects.

General Continuing Education Certificates are awarded by the EBC for this program (1.5 training contact hours). Certificates are automatically provided via email link for registered attendees at the conclusion of the webinar.
