Dr. Paul Kirshen to specialize in integration of climate change adaptation solutions

Duxbury, MA – Battelle, the world’s largest independent research and development organization, has hired Dr. Paul Kirshen from Tufts University to lead an important climate change initiative.

Conducting consulting and research on climate change since 1988, Dr. Kirshen will apply his long-term experience and knowledge to the Battelle initiative to develop a climate change adaptation practice that will address the multidimensional impacts of climate change. This practice complements Battelle’s extensive existing services in the mitigation of greenhouse gases. Dr. Kirshen is also an internationally recognized expert in integrated water resources management.

“Dr. Kirshen has been conducting research nationally and internationally for two decades, including completing one of the first risk-based integrated assessments of adaptation strategies for coastal urban infrastructure systems,” said Tracy Stenner, manager of Battelle’s Environmental product line. “He clearly will be a valuable addition to our team and we’re proud to have him join Battelle.”

“Given the global reach of Battelle and the commitment of its large multidisciplinary group of scientists and engineers to excellence, Battelle is well- positioned to help address the pressing challenges of climate change management – it is exciting to join their effort,” said Dr. Kirshen.

Dr. Kirshen, who will be based at Battelle’s Duxbury, Massachusetts facility, joins Battelle part time while he transitions from his current position as Research Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and as the Director of the Water: Systems, Science and Society Graduate Program at Tufts University. That transition will be complete June 1, when Dr. Kirshen joins Battelle full time.

His educational background includes a Ph.D and an M.S. in civil engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Sc.B in engineering from Brown University.
